Sewage backing up into the house: how serious is it
Match what you see to the response it needs.
Slow drains and an occasional smell
Book a camera look. The line may be starting to sag or collect roots.
Repeated clogs after cabling
The pipe likely has a defect that cleaning will not remove. Schedule an inspection this week.
Sewage rising in a tub, shower or floor drain
Stop using water and call the 24/7 line. Same-day scheduling is offered when available.
How sewer lines fail
Old clay and cast iron crack at joints. Orangeburg (a tar-paper fiber pipe used decades ago) softens and ovals. Roots find a hairline gap, enter for moisture and widen it until the line holds water instead of moving it.
A bellied section (a low spot where the pipe has settled) holds sewage and solids, so the line clogs at the same spot again and again. That is the failure a cable cannot cure.
Symptoms and what they usually mean
| Symptom | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Gurgling toilet when the tub drains | Partial blockage in the main | Camera inspection |
| Wet or sunken patch in the yard over the line | Cracked or collapsed pipe | Stop using water, call |
| Sewer odor in the basement or yard | Open joint or dry trap | Smoke or camera check |
| Backups return within weeks of cleaning | Bellied pipe or root entry | Repair estimate |
| Foundation drain gurgles in heavy rain | Stormwater entering the line | Camera and flow check |
Repair options and their trade-offs
Three approaches cover most failures. A camera tells us which one fits.
Spot repair
Dig down and replace one short section.
- Good for a single broken joint
- Leaves the rest of the old line in place
- Requires a trench at that spot
Trenchless lining
A resin-soaked liner is cured inside the old pipe.
- Limited digging at access points
- Works on cracks and root gaps
- Does not fix a collapsed or badly sagging pipe
Full replacement
New pipe from the house to the connection.
- Best when the pipe is failing along its length
- Longest job and most disruption
- Brings a clean, uniform line
Homeowners often ask us about the trenchless option that inflates a liner. It is a good fit for many lines, but not for pipe that has already collapsed or lost its slope.
Who owns what in Voorhees
The township collects sewage and conveys it to the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority system. Voorhees code Chapter 51 includes a section on sewer maintenance and replacement responsibility, so ask the township which part of the line, from the house to the connection, belongs to you.
Permit rules for sewer work vary, so ask the Voorhees Construction Department before you commit to a method. If your property is on a septic system instead of the sewer, the Camden County Department of Health is part of that picture.

- 01
Camera the line
We send a push camera in from the cleanout and mark the depth and location of each defect.
- 02
Review the footage with you
You see what we see, with the pipe material and the problem spots explained.
- 03
Call 811 and mark utilities
Before any digging, New Jersey law asks for a call to 811 at least three business days ahead.
- 04
Repair and test
We repair, line or replace as agreed, then run water and confirm the flow.
What drives the cost of sewer repair
Length of the damaged section
A single joint is a small job. A full house-to-street run is large.
Depth and surroundings
Deep pipe under a driveway, patio or mature tree costs more to reach.
Method chosen
Lining, spot repair and replacement each need different crews and materials.
Restoration
Patching a lawn or paving is separate from the pipe work.
Permits and inspections
Ask the township what applies to the work before pricing it.
Insurance note. Homeowner insurance may not cover pipe that failed from age or roots, but it may cover resulting interior damage if you have sewer backup coverage, so check your policy. When shopping around for estimates, ask each company to base its quote on a recorded camera run, not a guess from the surface.
When a repair is the wrong move
If the camera shows a short, isolated crack, a full replacement is more than you need. If it shows a long run of broken joints, repeated spot repairs add up and a replacement is usually the better value. We will tell you which side your line falls on.
Related work and nearby service
A recorded sewer inspection is the first step for any repair estimate. When roots are the only problem and the pipe is sound, sewer line cleaning may be all you need.
We serve the whole Voorhees area, including Lindenwold, and the process is the same: camera first, then a plain explanation.

Common questions
Yes. The 24/7 line is open overnight and on weekends, and a plumber can be dispatched the same day when available. Tell us if sewage is entering the house so we can prioritize.
It works well for cracks, root gaps and joint leaks in a pipe that still holds its shape and slope. It does not repair a collapsed section or a deep belly. The camera result decides.
If several neighbors have backups at once, the main may be the cause. If only your house is affected, it is usually your lateral. Ask the township who maintains which section.
Yes. Roots enter through small gaps and grow into a mat that catches paper and solids. Cutting them gives temporary relief, but the gap they came through still needs repair.
Permit rules vary, so ask the Voorhees Construction Department before work starts. Plumbing work must be done by licensed persons under New Jersey rules.
Septic lines and tanks fall under different rules, including Camden County Department of Health. Tell us when you call so the right crew is sent.
